Reader votes

Votes are anonymous. To count one vote per reader we set a single random cookie (venn_vid) and store a one-way hash of it together with a few coarse request attributes. We store a one-way hash of your IP address for abuse prevention and never the IP itself. We cannot link an anonymous vote back to a person.

Signing in with X (optional)

You can sign in with X so your vote counts in the separate “Verified readers” line. With your consent, X shares your own public profile with us. We store your X user id, @handle, display name, whether your account is verified, your follower count, and when you first and last signed in. We do not keep your X access token: we use it once to read your profile and then revoke it. We cannot post or read anything on your behalf. Your votes made while signed in are linked to this record. We set one signed cookie (venn_sess) that keeps you signed in for 30 days. Signing out deletes the cookie.

To delete your data, sign in and use the button below. It sends a request to POST /api/auth/delete. This removes your reader record (and your Venn profile, if you made one) and signs you out. If you bought a Deep Report, the purchase record is kept for accounting but no longer linked to you (see “Deep Report and payments” below). Your past votes stay in the totals but are no longer linked to your X account. To also remove Venn’s access on X’s side, go to X’s settings: Security and account access → Apps and sessions → Connected apps.

“What’s your Venn?” (optional)

When you are signed in with X and ask for it on your Venn page, we compute a profile of your own voting: your lean per category, a bridge score, a contrarian score and the public figures whose recorded stances most often match your votes. It uses only the votes you cast on Venn while signed in, plus the public debate data already on this site. We do not read your X posts, likes or followers, we do not use any other site, and no AI model is involved. Nobody can request a profile of someone else. We store the result (aggregate numbers only, not your individual votes) and it is private. It becomes public only if you turn on sharing, which creates a link with a random address and a share image. Turning sharing off kills that link for good. You can delete the profile at any time on the same page; deleting your reader data (below) deletes it too.

Deep Report and payments

The Deep Report is computed from the same data as your Venn profile (your own votes and the public stances on this site), live each time you open it; we don’t store it. If it is sold rather than free, payment is handled entirely by Stripe on Stripe’s checkout page, under Stripe’s privacy policy. We never see or store your card number or billing details. We store only the Stripe ids of the payment (checkout session and payment intent), the amount and currency, the status (paid or refunded), and the purchase date, linked to your reader record. Stripe sends us those facts in a signed message; we keep the message id to avoid processing it twice. When you delete your reader data, the purchase record stays (for tax and accounting) but is no longer linked to your X account. See the terms and the refund policy.

Both Sides Daily newsletter (optional)

If you sign up for the daily email, we store your email address, where on the site you signed up, and when you signed up, confirmed and (if you do) unsubscribed. We only send it after you click the link in the confirmation email. To limit abuse of the sign-up form we keep a one-way hash of your IP address for two days, never the IP itself. Emails are delivered by our email provider, Resend, which processes your address only to send them. Links in the email carry campaign tags (utm_source=newsletter) so we can count visits from it; we do not use tracking pixels. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe any time. We keep the record of an unsubscribed address so that it isn’t mailed again; email hello@vennsides.com to have it deleted entirely.

Embedded X posts

Debate pages embed public X posts using X’s own embed script. When those load, X may set its own cookies and receive your IP address under X’s privacy policy.

Analytics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies or fingerprinting and does not track you across sites.

Public figures

Venn only lists accounts that are public figures (X-verified, 100k+ followers) or news organisations, and only with a link to the public post in which the position was stated. If you believe a listing is wrong, use the corrections form.
